They add it to their prison PIN list through the in-cell kiosk. Approval usually takes two to five days depending on the prison.
Every call is cheaper automatically
When they call, the prison system charges the landline rate. The call forwards straight to your mobile. You answer as normal, nothing changes on your end.
The figures in the calculator are based on the national HMPPS tariff that has been in place since 1 April 2025. The rates below are confirmed by the Ministry of Justice and fixed until May 2027. The key difference is between calling a mobile number and calling a landline — it is what drives the saving.
Most people in the UK no longer have a traditional home landline. This means most prisoners end up calling their family on a mobile number by default, which places every call in the more expensive mobile billing tier. At 5.50p per minute on weekdays, a daily 20-minute call costs £1.10 each time. That adds up to around £30 per month, paid out of phone credit that has to be topped up from limited prison wages or money sent in from outside.
The landline rate of 2.48p per minute is less than half that. The mechanism that creates this saving is simple: a virtual landline gives your loved one a standard UK local number that the prison phone system treats as a landline. The call is then automatically routed to your mobile. You receive it exactly as you would any other call. From your loved one's perspective, nothing changes either — they dial a number, you pick up.
The calculator shows the monthly figure, but for most families the real impact becomes clear when you look at the numbers over time. A saving of £13 per month may feel modest on its own. Over a two-year sentence it is over £310. Over three years it is nearly £470. For families already under financial pressure from the loss of a household income, that money is meaningful — it is credit that stays in the phone account rather than needing to be sent in, and it means longer calls without rationing time.
It is worth being clear about something the calculator reflects: the saving comes out of the prisoner's phone credit, not out of your pocket. Your loved one spends less on each call because they are on the cheaper billing tier. As the recipient, you pay your monthly subscription to Prison Call and receive every call at no additional charge. The net effect is that the same amount of phone credit sent in each week goes considerably further, which means more call time, fewer top-ups needed, and less financial stress on both sides.
If your loved one moves to a different prison, your Prison Call number travels with them. They simply need to add it to the PIN list at the new establishment through the same process they used before. You do not need to change anything or sign up again. The number stays the same, the rate stays the same, and calls continue as before once the new PIN list is approved.
The current HMPPS rates are 5.50p per minute (weekday) and 3.60p per minute (weekend) to call a UK mobile, and 2.48p per minute (weekday) and 2.20p per minute (weekend) to call a UK landline. These rates have been in place since 1 April 2025 and are fixed until 31 May 2027.
A virtual landline is a standard UK local phone number that forwards calls to your mobile. When your loved one dials it from the prison phone, the system charges the cheaper landline rate rather than the mobile rate. You receive the call on your mobile exactly as normal — no app, no changes to your phone.
It depends on how often your loved one calls and for how long. Use the calculator above to get a figure based on your situation. As a guide, a family receiving a 20-minute daily weekday call saves around £13 per month, or over £160 per year.
